What Are the STARS AWARDS?
STARS Awards

Our Fourth Annual Student Theatre Arts Recognition Scholarship Program presented by the STARS Awards Inc. (501c3). Patterned after the Tony Awards the STARS Awards is a Scholarship Recognition Awards Program with No Fees to Participating High Schools. Our STARS Awards Sponsors make this program possible.

The mission of the STARS Awards is to recognize and celebrate the talented theatre students across the Town of Brookhaven, Long Island, to encourage them to pursue their dreams, and to stimulate local interest while developing an understanding of the value of theatre education in a well rounded school curriculum. We strive to raise the bar on theatre education by encouraging increased attendance and community pride at our school productions, much like school sports organizations. One student aptly described theatre as their "sport," and we look at the STARS Awards as the "playoffs".

Qualified judges attend plays at the participating high schools in the Town of Brookhaven and using an adapted rubric as an evaluation tool, score students on a variety of skills. The top scoring students are announced as the nominees, who attend a Gala STARS Awards Ceremony, where the winners are announced and presented with an Elegant Etched Glass Award and Scholarships.

High Schools in the STARS Awards coverage area are: Rocky Point, Mount Sinai, Miller Place, Port Jefferson, Three Village, Selden, Centereach, Comsewogue, Sachem North, Sachem East, Longwood and William Floyd. (We will accept any High School on Long Island). Reaching over 250,000 residents in the Town of Brookhaven with the estimated audience reach of 1000 per school show.

Highest scoring students are nominees; highest scoring student in each category is the winner in categories of drama, comedy and musical. Others include choreography, set design, lighting design, poster art, and recognition of stage managers.

"Innovations in Theatre Education," a prestigious award goes to one school each year that goes above and beyond the usual high school play, offering challenges and opportunities to students in the arts. 2008 Winner of the Innovations in Theatre Education was Ward Melville High School, the 2009 & 2010 Winner of the Innovations in Theatre Education was William Floyd High School.

In May, nominees & their families attend a Nominee Congratulatory Dinner celebrating the nominees.

In June, nominees & their families attend a Red Carpet, Black Tie Gala STARS Awards Ceremony at the SHEA THEATRE sponsored with our partner Suffolk County Community College ~ each nominee walks across the stage and receives recognition, a gift bag, and a certificate, each winner is announced and presented with an Elegant Etched Glass Award and Scholarships.

Currently the STARS Awards offer $250 Scholarships to our winners (no expiration, paid directly to any Arts Education institution and/or educator). In addition to the STARS Awards Scholarship, the winner has the opportunity of a matching Scholarship from Stony Brook University (no expiration, however, you must attend Stony Brook University to take advantage of this Scholarship) and a matching Scholarship from Dowling College (no expiration, however, you must attend Dowling College to take advantage of this Scholarship). The amount of funds we raise annually determines the size of the scholarships we are able to offer.

Just like the TONY AWARDS, we have performances throughout the STARS Awards Ceremony. The honor of being awarded one of these five stand alone performance slots are hand selected and awarded to performances seen by the Judges throughout the year. The judges award the five slots to those outstanding moments that represent entertaining performances. Certainly it is a hard job to narrow down the outstanding performances to five.
